About this product

A Discovery Beneath The Aegean In 1900, a Greek sponge diver named Elias Stadiatis dropped about 45 meters into the Aegean Sea near a speck of an island called Antikythera - and came up screaming about a pile of bodies and horses lying on the seafloor. What he'd actually found was a 2,000-year-old Roman-era shipwreck. Buried in the wreckage was a corroded lump of bronze that the recovery team almost dismissed as junk. It took more than a hundred years - and X-ray imaging technology that didn't exist in 1900 - for scientists to figure out what that lump of bronze actually was: a hand-cranked mechanical computer built by the ancient Greeks, able to predict eclipses, track the Olympic calendar, and model the movement of five planets. Nothing that advanced would be built again for over a thousand years.

Today it's called the Antikythera Mechanism, and researchers are still arguing about who built it and why. It's one of hundreds of ancient mysteries just like it - Atlantis, the Nazca Lines, the Voynich Manuscript, Göbekli Tepe, Oak Island - sitting in plain sight, criminally under-covered, and loaded with content potential for anyone willing to dig into them.
